Valley Medical Group (VMG) is seeking a distinguished physician leader to serve as Patient Safety Officer and Associate Medical Director for Hospitalist Services, while maintaining an active clinical practice as an Adult Hospitalist. This senior leadership role offers a unique opportunity to shape enterprise-wide patient safety strategy, advance high reliability principles, and influence the delivery of high-quality hospital medicine across a dynamic health system. The role is ideally suited for a physician who is passionate about system-based improvement and who thrives at the intersection of clinical excellence, safety science, and physician engagement.
Located in Paramus, New Jersey, the Valley Health System (VHS) is one of the most honored healthcare organizations in the state. Comprised of a 370-bed, not-for-profit, acute care hospital, Valley Medical Group, a multispecialty group practice with more than 500 physicians and advanced practitioners representing over 60 medical and surgical specialties and Valley Home Care. The Valley Health System is committed to delivering safe, high-quality, compassionate care while fostering innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer and working in close partnership with the Chair of Hospitalist Services, the Patient Safety Officer and Associate Medical Director, Hospitalist Services will serve as a physician champion for patient safety, quality, and continuous improvement. This role integrates executive oversight of patient safety and clinical risk management with operational leadership of hospitalist services and frontline patient care in a supportive, mission-driven environment. The Patient Safety Officer will Chair the Medical Staff Patient Safety Committee, lead the organization toward High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles and promote a culture of transparency, learning and Just Culture. In addition, this leader will collaborate closely with nursing, quality, risk management, and executive teams to drive sustainable improvements in safety outcomes, reduce preventable harm, and enhance regulatory readiness across the system.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced physician leader in patient safety, quality, or clinical operations within a hospital or health system, with demonstrated success leading root cause analyses, safety investigations, and regulatory readiness efforts. Expertise with The Joint Commission, CMS, and national patient safety frameworks is required. Candidates must hold an MD or DO, be board certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine and be eligible for medical licensure in the state of New Jersey. A master’s degree in Patient Safety, Quality Improvement, or related field or certification such as CPPS or CPHQ, is preferred and reflects the system’s strong commitment to advancing patient safety leadership expertise.
