The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair, Department of Family Medicine and Population Health.
The Department of Family Medicine and Population Health is one of 19 clinical departments in the VCU Health System and was established in 1970 charged with the mission of preparing competent family physicians to care for the people of Virginia – and in that mission VCU School of Medicine has achieved outstanding success. Over 1,400 family medicine residents have been trained as well as thousands of medical students. The Department of Family Medicine and Population Health has furthered their mission and scope of influence through the merger with the former department of Epidemiology and Community Health in February 2013. This has allowed for expanded research capabilities in the efforts to improve population health and positions the department as potential leaders in the effective integration of primary care and public health.
The Chair will report to the Dean, School of Medicine. The Chair will serve as the department’s academic and administrative leader and will have responsibility for providing direction in research; educational programs; faculty recruitment, retention and development; budget management and oversight; and strategic planning. The successful candidate must articulate a vision that enhances the excellence of the department, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across the University, and undertakes new initiatives while maintaining and growing the existing departmental clinical, research, and teaching missions. Successful candidates must be Board certified in Family Medicine and qualified for faculty appointment at the rank of Professor. The candidate must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
