The chief executive officer (CEO) of Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) at VCU will be responsible for the strategic leadership and operational management of the children’s hospital and related clinical entities. The CEO has responsibility for budgeting, safety, quality, administration, and the introduction of new initiatives for children’s services. The CEO of CHoR will collaborate with hospital, School of Medicine, and system senior executives to partner and facilitate goals and objectives for CHoR and its facilities as well as for the development of shared services. The CEO is expected to participate in the shared goals of the health system, being cognizant of patient care, education, and research, while advancing the stature, scope, and performance of children’s programs.
Candidates for the CHoR CEO role will have strong operating expertise gained in complex medical center environments, combined with experience planning and directing new programs to meet the public’s increasing health and social needs related to children. An orientation toward marketing, development, diversification, and the “unbundling” of certain traditional hospital services is highly desirable. The successful candidate should possess strong financial acumen, with knowledge of current regulations and trends in healthcare, particularly related to reimbursement, cost containment, and optimal utilization of resources. All candidates should bring enthusiasm for engaging with practicing physicians and all team members to deliver care of the highest quality to children and their families.
10+ years' experience in a leadership role, with preference for a chief executive officer, chief operating officer, or other senior operating executive
Children's hospital and/or pediatric experience, in a complex medical center environment
Experience in a major teaching hospital or academic medical center, with understanding of the importance of teaching programs, medical school relationships, and research.
Experience within a health system. Success within a matrixed healthcare organization is highly desirable.
Experience opening a new building or developing a major new program.
Involvement in external relations, including developing relationships with business and community leaders and enlisting their support in philanthropy, as well as national prominence and participation in professional associations and/or community organizations.
Master's degree required, in business, health administration or related field, or a professional degree in medicine, nursing or other clinical discipline, with significant P&L management responsibility.
