The Managing Director of Interventional Support Center will have full responsibility for the 24/7/365 operation of the Interventional Support Center facility that cleans and sterilizes instruments for multiple Penn Medicine entities. This responsibility will also include managing efficient and timely transportation logistics between that site and the entities it serves for instruments, supplies, and linen. The Director must ensure that the Interventional Support Center is fully staffed with qualified personnel who function as a high-performing team and follow standards set by The Joint Commission, AAMI and other such organizations to drive the highest possible quality outcomes. A focus on the operating budget as well as mutually agreed upon key performance indicators is critical.
The Director will need to maintain a highly collaborative and communicative relationship with the Governance Committee as well as Entity Clients including senior leadership, perioperative leadership and perioperative line staff. It will also be critical for the Director to be a leader skilled in motivating a multi-disciplinary team to high levels of employee engagement.
Work with a set of multi-disciplinary committees, based on outlined expectations that represent all stakeholders and clients of the Interventional Support Center to design, construct and operationalize it. Fully implement change management principles with existing and new staff to ensure a successful launch.
Ensure the Interventional Support Center opens on time and within budget. It must be designed and operationalized in a manner that is highly efficient with standardized processes guided by Lean Six Sigma and change management principles.
Lead a multi-disciplinary team in a motivational manner that results in high employee engagement. A focus on teamwork, open communication, diversity and inclusion is critical. Employees in instrument processing, materials management, transportation, environmental services and plant operations will all be in the Managing Director’s scope. Responsible for all aspects of personnel management including hiring, performance appraisals and disciplinary actions.
Ensure department meets The Joint Commission, AAMI, and applicable ISO and GMP standards and that all staff are educated, trained, and knowledgeable of standards. Ensure staff competencies are documented and updated annually. Coordinate with Penn Medicine Academy as well as key regulatory stakeholders in the development of these training protocols.
Maintain excellent relationships with key customers at all entities being served by the center. Proactively notify customers of any service delays or disruptions and respond promptly to all customer complaints and concerns. Take a customer-centric approach to operations and put contingency plans in place for anticipated and unanticipated issues that may disrupt service.
Meet regularly with perioperative leadership to share key performance indicators and to assist as appropriate the streamlining of preference cards and instrument sets across the involved entities. Report out to entity and health system leadership on a routine basis.
Develop and manage a performance driven operating budget. Set routine cost reduction goals focused on standardized supplies and instruments. Develop and maintain systems for the efficient and cost effective processing of reusable supplies and instrumentation while maintaining all state, federal and regulatory agency standards.
Map process steps, determine barriers and restrictions and create process improvement projects to eliminate identified problems on an ongoing basis. Benchmark other organizations and introduce upgrades and improvements when appropriate.
Continuously communicate with up-stream suppliers and downstream users to determine production capacity requirements, evaluate existing capabilities to meet demand and make adjustments as required.
Provide productivity, logistics, sterilization and quality reporting on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis. Set improvement targets utilizing a Lean Six Sigma (or similar) approach. Develop standards of excellence and track performance against those standards.
Closely monitor trucking routes and cart flow throughout the Interventional Support Center and to the final destinations within the entities in an efficient manner.
Ensure proper utilization, support and maintenance of instrument tracking software to foster excellent operations and continuous improvement.

Bachelor’s Degree Healthcare (especially RN or surgical services), Engineering, Business or related field (preferred and at least 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a highly matrixed organization. Previous experience managing the processing of reusable medical supplies and instrumentation preferred.
Master’s Degree Healthcare (especially MSN or surgical services), Engineering, Business or related field (preferred)
Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification
